Jeff Gronberg is CEO of deciBel Research, an employee-owned business in Cummings Research Park in Huntsville, Ala. He is a distinguished leader in north Alabama, serving as a Trustee for the University of Alabama System. Gronberg is a former chair of the Huntsville/Madison County Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors, and currently serves on the Redstone Regional Alliance. Gronberg is a graduate of the University of Alabama.
Q: Where do you live?
Gurley, AL on Keel Mountain in unincorporated Madison County approximately 30 minutes from Huntsville. We have a small farm (or trees and weeds) of around 200+ acres that started off as 50 acres that we’ve expanded over the years. I’ve lived in Toney, Huntsville and Gurley over my time in Huntsville.
Q: Where are you from and how did you get to the Redstone region?
I am a Redstone region native, though moved away for 14+ years starting in college and made my way back. I’ve lived and/or worked in a lot of places including Atlanta, Orlando, San Francisco, Los Angeles, New York and even COS. We moved back to Huntsville between the birth of our son (in Atlanta) and our daughter (in Huntsville at Huntsville Hospital). So, I’ve been back for the last 25+ years.
Q: If you raised/are raising kids in the Redstone region, please share about their education experience.
We homeschooled both of our kids, with a strong homeschool community that is available in North Alabama. We used a local homeschool covering and did primarily traditional homeschool with some co-op usage. In high school we utilized the early college/dual enrollment options to get college credit. Both of our children attended the University of Alabama in Huntsville (UAH) for undergraduate degrees. My son was a Math/Computer Science double major and my daughter was a Communications major in the Honors College.
My son went on to get a Masters in Artificial Intelligence from Johns Hopkins and my daughter got her MBA from UAH. My son now works in the Washington DC area supporting national defense and my daughter is in Birmingham working for a large construction firm in their communications department.
Q: What is an ideal weekend for you?
An ideal weekend for me is getting outdoors and hiking and working on our acreage in some way. During football season you will likely find me in Tuscaloosa (or possibly an away game) cheering on the University of Alabama (Roll Tide). Alternately, it might be catching a concert at the Orion Amphitheater (my favorite concert venue), grabbing a nice dinner in downtown Huntsville, or maybe at an event at the Von Braun center. But being outside in the woods is my favorite.
Q: What is one thing you would like Space Command personnel to know about the region?
We have many similarities with the COS area in that we are a very military friendly region, we value our outdoors and have many opportunities for outdoor activities. We have a strong space heritage and appreciate and respect the contributions of space professionals across military, civil and commercial efforts. I think you’ll find us to be very complementary to the type of life you’ve forged in COS. Give us a shot. I think if you come for a visit, you’ll be pleasantly surprised as we have a little something for everyone.
