Universities

We have a number of highly ranked colleges and universities in our state. Additionally, U.S. Space Command employees located in Alabama may be eligible for an in-state tuition benefit at University of Alabama System institutions – The University of Alabama, The University of Alabama at Birmingham, and The University of Alabama in Huntsville.

The University of Alabama in Huntsville (UAH)

The University of Alabama in Huntsville (UAH) is a public national university located in the nation’s second largest research park and includes 17 high-tech research centers and labs. It is responsible for nearly $154.5 million in annual research expenditures and maintains strong partnerships with federal agencies and commercial organizations such as NASA, the Missile Defense Agency, and the U.S. Army Materiel Command. Famous UAH alumni include astronaut Dr. Jan Davis, Discovery Channel founder John Hendricks, and Smarter Every Day host Destin Sandlin.

 
 

Alabama A&M University

Alabama A&M University is the largest Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) institution in the state. With more than 6,100 students, AAMU provides more than 60 undergraduate, graduate and certificate programs and concentrations, a diverse international faculty, 50 plus student organizations, and an extensive alumni network comprised of politicians, educators, entrepreneurs, engineers, and more.

 
 

Oakwood University

Oakwood University is situated on 1,185 beautiful acres, located in Huntsville, Alabama. It is consistently recognized by national media, business and educational associations. US News and World Report ranks it perennially among the nation’s “Best Colleges,” both in terms of the “Historically Black Colleges and Universities” (HBCUs) and “Regional Colleges/South” categories; the magazine also ranks Oakwood among the top 10 HBCUs with highest graduation rates. The school is also the home of the internationally renowned, award-winning choir, The Aeolians of Oakwood University.

 
 

University of North Alabama

Nestled in the idyllic upper northwest corner of the state in Florence, the University of North Alabama’s hometown is a focal point of civic pride. UNA offers the true college experience with all the amenities of a larger school but without the overwhelm. Its beautiful, historic campus gives you access to a state-of-the-art library, research laboratories, and historic facilities. Roar Lions!

 
 

Athens State University

Athens State University is one of the few universities in the nation dedicated solely to degree completion for transfer students, meaning it serves junior-level and senior-level undergraduate students in helping them finish their degrees. It also serves graduate students in their pursuit of career advancement through a master’s degree.

 
 

Jacksonville State University

Located in the Appalachian foothills almost midway between Birmingham and Atlanta, Jacksonville State University offers undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral programs in a variety of different fields. With just over 10,000 students, JSU is known as the “Friendliest Campus in the South!”

 
 

Faulkner University

Faulkner University offers more than 60 on-campus majors and over 23 online majors. The charm of its small campuses, family-like warmth, and scholarly professors who know your name sets it apart in the world market. The average student class size at Faulkner is 15 students.

Community colleges

The Alabama Community College System (ACCS) is Alabama’s gateway to world-class, affordable education and technical training for the necessary skills to compete in a constantly evolving workforce. In all, the system consists of 24 community and technical colleges. Below are a handful of community colleges located in north Alabama.

 
 

Calhoun Community College

The largest of the two-year institutions in the Alabama Community College System, Calhoun Community College is an open-admission, community-based, state-supported, coeducational, comprehensive community college dedicated to providing affordable, high-quality and accessible education to individuals in its four-county service area.

 
 

Drake State Community & Technical College

Drake State Community & Technical College offers flexible, affordable technical and university-transfer degrees, industry certification, adult and continuing education, and customized skills training to support and enhance the north Alabama community. Many of Drake State’s graduates have gone on to start their own businesses, including salons, machine shops, welding shops, IT services, heating and air conditioning businesses, and many others.

 
 

Wallace State Community College

Wallace State Community College is located in Hanceville, Alabama, which is southeast of Huntsville. This institution offers more than 100 in-demand degrees, certifications, and transfer options to students of all skill sets. It is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC) to award associate degrees.

 
 

Snead State Community College

Located in the heart of Sand Mountain in northeast Alabama, the Boaz campus of Snead State Community College is within driving distance of Birmingham and Huntsville. The convenience of flexible scheduling and online classes allows students to pursue their education while balancing their hectic lifestyle.
